RECIPIENTS

Sea Matias of The Black Yard Farm Coop

Our 124th Real Farmer Care recipient is Sea Matias of The Black Yard Farm Coop @blackyardfarmcoop in Sloansville, NY.

Sea writes, “I’m a farmer and educator at The Black Yard Farm Coop. I am a recent graduate of Farm School NYC and a former ecology educator at NYBG. I’ve been an educator and urban farmer for four years, volunteering, apprenticing and teaching at different gardens throughout The Bronx, NY. My vision with The Black Yard Farm Cooperative is to combine my love for education and plants to create a farming curriculum surrounding the history and methods of African American Agriculture, cultural and indigenous practices that are relevant and inclusive for all.

The biggest challenge for us as a farm is the lack of starter funds to begin our important work in building our envisioned Black Farmer Commons. We need as much financial support as possible to provide the infrastructure needed to welcome aspiring Black farmers on the land to begin our programming.”
