The 282nd recipient is Kidder Gowen of Hawk and Handsaw Farm @hawk_and_handsaw_farm in Portsmouth, RI. Kidder writes:

What self-care and well-being mean to me as a farmer: Self-care is taking care of the body and mind. This is often the advice I hear from older farmers: ‘take care of your body!’ No one wants to fall apart but especially when your livelihood relies on it. As for the mind, as a society, I feel, we take for granted the practice of self-regulation. Farmers experience a huge amount of stress. From personal experience, so much time is wasted by letting stress overwhelm us. It makes everything take longer and perhaps not even done well due to arguments or frustration. If we can learn to self/co-regulate more often and take care of our bodies through stretching, massage, dance, etc. then we can last a lot longer doing the things we live to do.”

How I might use this $100 self-care award: “I would apply this funding towards massage which unfortunately is not yet covered by insurance and also unfortunately $100 is not even enough to cover a full massage in my area, but it is still appreciated and helpful support! Acupuncture is currently supported by my insurance through RI Medicaid so I feel there is hope for massage one day too!”

Most important self-care needs that contribute to my well-being as a farmer: “Massage, non violent communication course, therapy, mediation, movement classes, membership to a spa/bathhouse with sauna, and a hobby uninvolved with farming tasks.”
