RECIPIENTS

Isaac Porter of Pond Hill Farm

The 336th recipient is Isaac Porter of Pond Hill Farm @pondhillfarm.pa in Kittanning, PA. Isaac writes:

What self-care and well-being mean to me as a farmer: “Self-care for me is keeping space for my own personal needs and fulfilling them as much as I can — physical/mental/spiritual/etc. Self-care can be challenging for farmers because most of us chose the career because we want to be providers — meaning putting others before ourselves and not considering self needs. I know I’ve definitely stretched myself too thin especially during critical farming moments (July/Aug) only considering the success of the farm. At that point self-care is an emergent need and it doesn’t give immediate relief. I try to stay ahead of it by providing basic self-care every day. Stretching, hygiene, mental breaks, creative outlets.”

How I might use this $100 self-care award: “Buy lotion to soothe my dry winter hands, and get a massage for my fatigued spine. Perhaps buy a cookbook to allow access to my creative side of my brain that doesn’t always get worked doing the daily chores of vegetable farming.”

Most important self-care needs that contribute to my well-being as a farmer: “It’s hard to pick just one. Most important for me is physical self-care. As a farmer, I sometimes push my body to the limit, and that kind of performance is only sustainable when I take good care of my body. I try to not eat junk and I stretch each morning. In the winter I go to the gym and in the summer I go hiking. I take my vitamins and see my doctors routinely. Also lotion and sunscreen.”
